Hello there! Dahlia season is in full swing and despite the drought, my dahlia garden is producing lots of flowers. Flowering its heart out, dahlia Labyrinth is stealing the show. With beautiful peach-pink flowers on dark stems, this dahlia is a flower growers dream.
It has been really, really warm in Holland. Dahlias originally come from Mexico and love the sun. But this summer has been so hot and dry even the dahlias thought it was a bit too much. They have been growing slower and some dahlias are not even flowering yet. The plants are healthy and green and have lots of buds, so I am sure they will flower this season. We still have September to look forward to!
Today I want to talk to you about the variety that has been most productive these last months: dahlia Labyrinth. I first discovered it in the dahlia show garden I visited. When I saw it, I immediately knew I wanted to grow it, and I haven’t been disappointed.
Despite the dry summer, the plants are healthy and lush and covered in flowers. The flowers grow on strong, dark stems and are all perfect. With wavy petals in an amazing colour combination of peach and pink, dahlia Labyrinth is definitely a favourite.
Do you need more reasons to grow dahlia Labyrinth? Here are three.
1. It’s a good cut flower dahlia
All dahlias make good cut flowers. The more you cut them, the more they bloom. When deciding what dahlias to grow, flower farmers will look for high productivity, colours that are in fashion, and long, strong stems. I’m not a professional grower, but in my experience, ball dahlias and cactus flowered dahlias make the best cut flower varieties. From the varieties I grow, Cornel and Preference are the best dahlias for cut flowers. Not only do they have firm blooms on strong stems, but they also have a good vase life. Even though dahlia Labyrinth has a shorter vase life (of 3 to 5 days), it still is a good cut flower. And with plants that produce flowers nonstop, just cut fresh ones every few days and you are fine. Make sure to cut flowers that are not fully open, to enjoy them a little bit longer in the vase.
2. Dahlia Labyrinth is great for flower arrangements
The gorgeous, fluffy flowers of Labyrinth look great in flower arrangements with other dahlias such as Burlesca, Jowey Winnie, and Preference. All dahlia varieties in pink, peach, and coral. I like the idea of using flowers in different shades of the same colour.
They also look fantastic in single-stem vases.
3. It’s a great flower to photograph
Dahlia Labyrinth is my favourite flower to photograph at the moment. I think it is very photogenic. The flower petals look like the most exquisite silk and catch the light beautifully. Just look at it!
I hope you enjoyed this post and feel inspired to grow dahlia Labyrinth in your own garden. I often get asked where I buy my tubers. Now is not the time to shop for dahlias, but I will let you know where I buy my tubers next year. Just follow along, here, or on Facebook or Instagram to receive updates.
If you have any questions, just leave a message in the comments. See you next time!
What a beauty! When the weather cooled a bit in April here my Dahlias went nuts. Hopefully September will do the same for yours. Seeing your blooms gets me excited for The coming season.
Looking forward to dahlia season is exciting! I hope you get enough rain. And I am sure I still have lots of flowers to look forward to 🙂
They are so beautiful!!
Could you please tell me where you get your tubers (D. Labyrinth)?
I have been trying everywhere, but no success! I live in Austria and I am desperate to buy these! The only place (ilovedahlia.nl) is sold out.
Maybe you can help??
Thank you very much!
Hello Marion, don’t be desperate, I am sure you will find some tubers! Last year, I ordered my tubers from Dicky Schippers, http://www.kwekerijschipper.nl, Frans Sturm, http://www.zeelanddahlia.nl, and Verberghe, order.verberghe.nl. I already ordered from Frans Sturm, but I don’t think he has Labyrinth this year. Good luck!
